The American Library Association — the professional association for librarians in the US, which has become a flashpoint in culture war debates over book banning, intellectual freedom, and the political orientation of librarianship.
Contested intellectual freedom: The ALA has historically championed intellectual freedom and opposed censorship. In recent years it has become controversial on two fronts: (1) Critics on the right argue the ALA has pushed progressive DEI frameworks into libraries and resisted legitimate parental oversight of library materials. (2) Critics on the left (after the election of Emily Drabinski as ALA president in 2023) noted that a self-described Marxist leading the organization represents a political capture incompatible with neutral intellectual freedom. The ALA's annual list of challenged books and its resistance to community-level content decisions is central to the library culture war.
