Being and Nothing

The opening dialectic of Hegel's Science of Logic — Being and Nothing are identical in their indeterminacy; their unity and difference generates Becoming — the first movement of speculative logic.

Pure Being, stripped of all determination, is identical to Nothing — both are the same empty immediacy. Their contradiction generates Becoming — the first concrete category. This dialectical movement is the model for all subsequent logic.
