Summary

American science fiction author and futurist — co-founder of the cyberpunk movement, editor of the Mirrorshades anthology, and one of the most influential technology commentators of the last 40 years.

Core Contribution

Cyberpunk co-founder: with William Gibson, Sterling defined cyberpunk science fiction (Mirrorshades anthology, 1986; his novel Schismatrix; Islands in the Net). Beyond fiction, Sterling's 'Dead Media Project' documented obsolete media technologies; his Viridian Design Movement (1999-2008) tried to make ecological design culturally attractive; his concept of 'design fiction' (creating artifacts from imagined futures to make speculation tangible) influenced design practice globally. WIRED columnist. One of the most polymath voices in technology culture.
