The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning — the organization that developed and promotes the SEL (Social Emotional Learning) framework used in schools across the United States and internationally.
SEL standardization: CASEL developed the five competency framework (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making) that gave social-emotional learning a standardized, assessable structure. The organization lobbied for SEL to be incorporated into Every Student Succeeds Act (2015) and has successfully mainstreamed the concept in American K-12 education. Critics argue CASEL's framework has been a vehicle for ideologically inflected content about identity and systemic oppression.
