Caitanya

Disciplines:
vedanta
theology/devotional theology

Summary

Bengali saint and mystic who initiated the Bengal Vaishnavism tradition (later formalized by the Goswamis), teaching that the soul's relationship to Krishna is one of inconceivable difference-and-non-difference (acintya bhedabheda).

Core Contribution

Acintya bhedabheda: the relationship between Brahman (Krishna) and souls/world is simultaneously one and different — a relationship beyond rational comprehension. Ecstatic devotion (bhakti) expressed in congregational chanting (kirtana) is the direct means to liberation in this age. Left no writings; the Goswamis of Vrindavana systematized his teachings.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Went into ecstatic states (bhava) during kirtana — weeping, losing consciousness, showing marks of the body identified with Krishna's — which Gaudiya theology interprets as direct experience of divine love.
  • The Hare Krishna movement (ISKCON) founded by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami in the 20th century regards Caitanya as an avatar of Krishna himself and carries his tradition globally.
