Summary

Indian ruler who founded the Maurya Empire — the first empire to unify most of the Indian subcontinent — after overthrowing the Nanda dynasty with the counsel of Kautilya (Chanakya), author of the Arthashastra.

Core Contribution

Unified most of the Indian subcontinent for the first time — Chandragupta's empire from the Indus to the Ganges provided the political template that subsequent Indian rulers aspired to, and his association with Kautilya's Arthashastra makes his reign the founding instance of rational statecraft in India.
