Gloria Ladson-Billings's pedagogical framework (also called Culturally Relevant Pedagogy) that affirms students' cultural identities, uses cultural knowledge as a resource, and develops socio-political consciousness.
Culture as asset: the framework rejects the 'deficit' model of minority students (which focuses on what they lack) in favor of an asset model that treats students' cultural backgrounds, languages, and experiences as resources for learning. The three pillars (academic excellence, cultural competence, critical consciousness) represent an integration of effective teaching, multicultural education, and critical pedagogy. Has become a standard framework in teacher education programs; extended by others as 'Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy' (Django Paris).
