Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) was an Italian poet whose Divine Comedy—Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso—is the greatest poem of medieval civilization and arguably the greatest work in any European language. It synthesizes medieval theology, philosophy, and politics into a supreme vision of the soul's journey to God.
The Divine Comedy is the supreme literary expression of the Christian vision of reality; Dante created the Italian literary language; his vision of Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise shaped Western imagination.
