Summary

American biologist who founded sociobiology — the study of the biological basis of social behavior — and was the world's leading expert on ants and biodiversity.

Core Contribution

Sociobiology: The New Synthesis (1975): a comprehensive account of the biological basis of social behavior across all animals, including a final chapter on human sociobiology — triggering an enormous political controversy. The Ants (with Bert Hölldobler): a definitive reference work on ant biology. Biophilia: the human love of nature as an evolved trait. Consilience: the unity of all knowledge — science can and should absorb the humanities. The biological basis of biodiversity conservation.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • At a 1978 AAAS conference, protestors poured water on his head from behind the stage while he was about to speak — the most dramatic physical attack on a scientist at an academic conference. He continued his lecture.
  • His debate with Stephen Jay Gould defined the sociobiology controversy — Gould and Lewontin's 'spandrels' paper was written partly in response to Wilson, and Wilson spent decades arguing that evolutionary psychology could not be wished away by political objection.
