Eight-Function Typology

Disciplines:
psychology
jungian analysis

Summary

John Beebe's model extending Jung's four cognitive functions to eight positions — each function operating in both extraverted and introverted form, each occupying an archetypal role in the psyche.

Core Contribution

Eight cognitive functions: Jung identified four functions (Thinking, Feeling, Sensing, Intuiting) each operating in two attitudes (Extraverted, Introverted) = 8 function-attitudes. Beebe assigns each an archetypal position: Hero (1st), Good Parent/Auxiliary (2nd), Puer/Puella (3rd), Anima/Animus (4th, inferior), Opposing Personality (5th), Senex/Witch (6th), Trickster (7th), Daemon/Daimon (8th). Each position has characteristic strengths, weaknesses, and forms of distress. The most psychologically sophisticated model of cognitive type.
