Summary

German-Austrian philosopher who revived the scholastic concept of intentionality — the directedness of mental states toward objects — as the defining mark of the mental, founding phenomenology.

Core Contribution

Intentionality is the mark of the mental: every mental state is about or directed toward an object (which may not exist). Mental phenomena are distinguished from physical phenomena by this directedness. Empirical psychology should study mental acts through inner perception. Inner perception is infallible — Brentano's foundationalism.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Resigned his professorship rather than take orders as a Catholic priest — an act of intellectual integrity that cost him his tenured position.
  • Intentionality: when I think of a unicorn, there is a mental act directed toward a unicorn — even though no unicorn exists; the object of the act is immanent to the act. This puzzle about intentional inexistence was Husserl's starting point.
