American industrialist who built H.C. Frick Coke Company — supplying Carnegie Steel with coke — and who as Carnegie Steel's chairman ordered the Pinkerton guards during the 1892 Homestead Strike, being shot and stabbed by Alexander Berkman; and who collected Old Masters from Duveen to create the Frick Collection.
Represents the Carnegie partner who was as essential to Carnegie's success as Carnegie himself — Frick's coke supply was the critical input that made Carnegie's steel the cheapest in the world — while the Homestead Strike and his assassination attempt made him the symbol of Gilded Age labor relations at their most brutal.
