Summary

Hebrew prophet of the 8th century BCE whose book uses his own troubled marriage as a sustained metaphor for Israel's unfaithfulness to God — one of the earliest and most vivid uses of marriage as a theological metaphor.

Core Contribution

Book of Hosea: the covenant between God and Israel is like a marriage — Israel's worship of Baal is spiritual adultery. Hosea's marriage to Gomer (who was unfaithful) becomes a living parable of divine faithfulness to a wayward people. The concept of hesed (loving-kindness) as the foundation of the covenant.
