Summary

American visual effects company founded by George Lucas in 1975 to create the effects for Star Wars — and which went on to create the visual effects for the Jurassic Park, Terminator, Indiana Jones, and dozens of other defining films — becoming the most important technology company in cinema history.

Core Contribution

Invented the digital visual effects industry — ILM created the morphing effect (Terminator 2), the first fully CGI character (The Abyss), and the first fully CGI film sequence (Genesis effect in Star Trek II) — making virtually every advance in modern film visual effects traceable to its research.
