Summary

Jacques Tourneur was a French-American filmmaker who worked in Hollywood from the 1930s onward, producing several of the finest B-movies and film noirs — 'Cat People', 'I Walked with a Zombie', 'Out of the Past'.

Core Contribution

Tourneur's 'Out of the Past' (1947) is the Platonic ideal of the fatalistic noir — the protagonist who cannot escape his past because his past is himself — a model Nolan absorbed through Chandler and applied in 'Memento' and 'Inception'.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Shadow as fate (Tourneur's noir heroes are always moving toward a shadow — their own past — that they cannot outrun because it moves at exactly the same speed they do)
