German philosopher who developed the idea that each culture and historical period has its own intrinsic value and should be understood on its own terms — the root of historicism and cultural pluralism — against the Enlightenment's universalism.
Historicism: each historical period has its own center of gravity (Schwerpunkt) and should not be judged by the standards of another. Cultural particularism: each people (Volk) has its own spirit (Volksgeist) expressed in its language, myths, and arts — all are equally valuable, none superior. Language is not a tool but the medium in which thought itself develops.
