Summary

German philosopher whose Being and Time reframed the question of Being through existential analysis of Dasein, and who developed a sustained critique of modernity's technological enframing.

Core Contribution

Being and Time: the question of Being has been forgotten; Dasein's mode of being is care, always already in-the-world, temporal, and toward-death. Being is disclosed through moods, especially anxiety which reveals the groundlessness of existence. Technology reduces all beings to standing-reserve (Bestand) available for manipulation.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Joined the Nazi party in 1933, served as rector of Freiburg, and delivered speeches celebrating the National Socialist revolution — a commitment he never fully repudiated and never adequately explained.
  • Coined nearly impenetrable neologisms (Dasein, Vorhandenheit, Zuhandenheit, Lichtung) as a deliberate strategy — ordinary language already carries metaphysical prejudices that must be broken.
  • Argued that the greatest danger of the modern age is not the bomb but the essence of technology — the reduction of all beings to resources for calculation — which makes the bomb merely symptomatic.
