MIT cosmologist and AI safety advocate — co-founder of the Future of Life Institute, author of Life 3.0 on AI futures, and developer of the Mathematical Universe Hypothesis.
Two contributions: (1) Mathematical Universe Hypothesis: the radical philosophical position that physical reality is a mathematical structure — and that therefore the universe contains all possible mathematical structures. Controversial in physics but generates serious discussion. (2) AI safety mainstreaming: Tegmark co-authored the open letter calling for a 6-month pause in advanced AI development (2023, signed by thousands of researchers), co-founded FLI (which organised the 2015 AI safety letter signed by Hawking, Musk, etc.), and wrote Life 3.0 to make AI risk legible to general audiences.
