Natural Selection

Summary

The mechanism of evolution proposed by Darwin and Wallace: heritable variations in traits that affect survival and reproduction will increase in frequency over generations — explaining adaptation without design.

Core Contribution

Three conditions sufficient for evolution by natural selection: (1) variation — individuals differ in traits; (2) heritability — traits are passed to offspring; (3) differential fitness — some variants survive and reproduce more than others. Given these conditions, adaptive evolution is inevitable — no design, no foresight required. The power of the mechanism: given enough time and variation, it can produce any level of apparent design. Combined with Mendelian genetics (Modern Synthesis): the complete mechanistic explanation of biological adaptation.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Darwin delayed publication of the Origin for ~20 years — sitting on his theory for fear of the reaction. The arrival of Wallace's independently derived manuscript in 1858 forced his hand.
  • The mechanism of natural selection is substrate-neutral: it applies to any system with variation, heritability, and differential fitness — including cultural variants, algorithms, and immune cells. This generality (Universal Darwinism) is its most important feature.
