Parmenides

Disciplines:

metaphysics

Summary

Ancient Greek philosopher from Elea who argued in verse that only being exists, non-being is inconceivable, and all apparent change and multiplicity is illusion — founding Western metaphysics' preoccupation with the one and the many.

Core Contribution

The Way of Truth: being is, non-being is not and cannot be thought; therefore there is no generation or destruction, no multiplicity, no motion — only one eternal, unchanging, spherical being. The Way of Opinion: a deceptive cosmology for mortals.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Wrote philosophy as poetry — his argument is presented in a divine vision in which a goddess reveals the two ways, giving metaphysics the force and authority of revelation.
  • His central argument (you cannot think non-being; therefore non-being is nothing; therefore being is all there is) forced every subsequent Greek philosopher to respond.
