Summary

Romanian-German Jewish poet writing in German who created the most important body of Holocaust poetry — fragments of language broken by the impossibility of what it must say.

Core Contribution

Todesfuge (Death Fugue): the signature poem of Holocaust literature — 'Death is a master from Germany' — a fugal structure in which beauty and horror are inseparable. The Meridian speech: a theory of poetry as encounter — the poem moves toward an other, at a moment when language itself has been contaminated. The Celan-Heidegger meeting (1967): Celan met Heidegger; hoped for an acknowledgment of Nazi complicity; received only silence.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Drowned himself in the Seine in 1970 — his suicide was widely understood as the final consequence of the impossibility that structured his poetry: the obligation to speak and the impossibility of speaking.
  • His meeting with Heidegger became a central event in post-Holocaust philosophical and literary history — Celan wrote a poem ('Todtnauberg') about the meeting that records his (unanswered) hope.
