Samuel Johnson (1709–1784) was an English writer, literary critic, and lexicographer who dominated the literary culture of 18th-century Britain. His Dictionary of the English Language (1755) was the pre-eminent English dictionary until the OED.
Compiled the first major English dictionary; his literary criticism set the standard for two centuries; his wit and wisdom (recorded by Boswell) remain inexhaustible.
