Social Emotional Learning

Disciplines:
psychology

Summary

Educational framework developed by CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) that teaches self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making alongside academic content.

Core Contribution

SEL as the operationalization of whole-child education: the CASEL framework (1994) provided a competency-based structure for schools to teach non-cognitive skills that researchers had shown predict life outcomes (career success, mental health, relationships) as well as academic achievement. The framework gave educators a vocabulary and assessment structure for social-emotional development. Critics on the left argue it medicalizes normal childhood; critics on the right argue it's a vehicle for ideological content about identity and social justice. Supporters argue the research base is strong and the skills genuinely matter.
