Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918–2008) was a Russian novelist and historian, survivor of the Soviet Gulag, whose works exposed the Soviet system's crimes. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970 and was expelled from the USSR in 1974.
His works (The Gulag Archipelago, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich) exposed the Soviet Gulag system to the world; his moral authority as a truth-teller against totalitarianism became legendary.
