Stoicism

Disciplines:
ethics
logic
metaphysics

Summary

Hellenistic philosophical school founded by Zeno of Citium holding that virtue alone constitutes eudaimonia, that the universe is rational and providentially ordered, and that emotions contrary to reason are errors of judgment.

Core Contribution

Developed the distinction between what is up to us (prohairesis — assent, impulse, desire) and what is not, making virtue the only genuine good and external circumstances indifferent. Provided the first systematic propositional logic and a materialist cosmology in which logos permeates all things.
