Summary

Hannah Arendt's analysis of the human condition through three fundamental activities — labor, work, and action — and the collapse of the public realm in modernity.

Core Contribution

The vita activa: three distinct human activities — labor (biological reproduction, cyclical), work (fabrication, making durable things), and action (speech and deed among others, the distinctly political activity). Natality: the human capacity for new beginnings as the foundation of political life — against Heidegger's being-toward-death. The public realm: politics requires a shared space where people appear to each other as equals. The modern collapse: the rise of the social (the economic) has destroyed the public realm. The 'banality of evil' anticipated in the analysis of thoughtlessness.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Arendt distinguishes labor (cyclical, biological, producing nothing durable) from work (making things that outlast us) — this distinction between the biological and the fabricating human has been contested but is one of the most generative in 20th-century political thought.
  • Written partly as a response to Sputnik: Arendt's preface notes that humanity was about to send objects into outer space and was 'about to... escape men's imprisonment to the earth.' The Human Condition is partly a meditation on what it means to be earthly beings who imagine escaping the earth.
