Summary

William James's massive two-volume work — the founding text of American psychology, covering consciousness, habit, emotion, the self, and free will with a combination of empirical rigor and philosophical depth.

Core Contribution

Stream of consciousness: consciousness is not a series of separate states but a continuous flow — 'river' or 'stream' rather than 'chain.' Habit: the great flywheel of society, the most precious conservative agent. The James-Lange theory of emotion: we feel afraid because we run — the physiological response precedes and constitutes the emotion. The self: the material, social, and spiritual self. Free will and consciousness: consciousness matters because it can intervene in the stream of neural activity. The definitive 19th-century psychology text.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • James worked on The Principles for 12 years — it was contracted in 1878 and delivered in 1890. He called the finished product 'a loathsome, distended, tumefied, bloated, dropsical mass, testifying to nothing but two facts: 1st, that there is no such thing as a science of psychology, and 2nd, that W.J. is an incapable.'
  • He then wrote Psychology: Briefer Course (1892) — immediately nicknamed 'the Jimmy' as opposed to 'the James' — which was the actual textbook that shaped American psychology education.
