The Seventh Seal

Summary

A disillusioned knight, Antonius Block (Max von Sydow), returns from the Crusades to find Sweden ravaged by plague. Death comes for him; he challenges Death to a chess game to buy time to find meaning. The film moves through landscapes of faith, doubt, suffering, and small human grace before its famous danse macabre finale.

Core Contribution

Bergman's masterwork on the silence of God, the impossibility of certainty, and the dignity of human beings in the face of meaninglessness. Established the visual and intellectual language of philosophical European cinema and introduced existentialist inquiry into mainstream film culture.
