Robert Jay Lifton's 1961 study of Chinese Communist thought reform programs — developing the eight criteria of totalist environments that became the standard framework for understanding cults and totalitarian indoctrination.
Eight-criteria framework: Based on interviews with Chinese and Western subjects of thought reform programs, Lifton identified: (1) milieu control; (2) mystical manipulation (the organization has a divine mission); (3) demand for purity; (4) confession (no private thoughts); (5) sacred science (the doctrine is beyond questioning); (6) loading the language (specialized jargon that forecloses thinking); (7) doctrine over person (experience must conform to doctrine, not vice versa); (8) dispensing of existence (non-members are not fully human). The framework provides a behavioral/psychological account of how indoctrination works regardless of its content — applicable to political, religious, or ideological totalism.
