Summary

Danish nobleman and astronomer — who built the most precise pre-telescopic observational instruments in history — whose observations of Mars enabled Kepler to derive the laws of planetary motion — who proposed the Tychonic system (Earth-centered with planets orbiting the sun) as a compromise between Ptolemy and Copernicus.

Core Contribution

Creates the observational database that enabled Kepler's laws — Brahe's 20 years of precise naked-eye observations (accurate to 1 arcminute, far better than any predecessor) were the data that Kepler used to derive the laws of planetary motion; his observational work is the bridge between pre-modern and modern astronomy.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Had his nose cut off in a duel at 20 and wore a metal prosthesis for the rest of his life — the duel (over a mathematical dispute) and the silver/gold nose that replaced his original mark him as the most colorful astronomer in history
  • His death is disputed — the traditional cause was burst bladder (from not leaving a banquet to urinate out of courtesy to the host Rudolf II); modern arsenic testing of his remains suggests possible poisoning, perhaps by Kepler who wanted access to his data; the data dispute between observer and mathematician is the most dramatic archive access problem in science history
