Russian writer and Gulag survivor who spent 17 years in the Kolyma labor camps and then produced Kolyma Tales — one of the supreme literary achievements of the 20th century under conditions of absolute extremity.
Bearing witness to the Gulag's destruction of the human: Shalamov's extraordinary project — writing literary prose about the experience of Kolyma — involved not only surviving the camps but resisting the moral degradation that survival required. His later writings on the question of whether literature can or should represent such experience are among the most sophisticated explorations of testimony and ethics in modern letters. Died in a Soviet nursing home in 1982.
