Disciplines:

Summary

American mathematician and science fiction author who coined the term 'technological singularity' and wrote foundational hard SF novels — including A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky.

Core Contribution

The Singularity concept: Vinge's 1993 essay 'The Coming Technological Singularity' introduced the idea that the creation of superhuman intelligence would represent a fundamental rupture in human history beyond which prediction is impossible — a singularity in the mathematical sense. This framing became the organizing concept of AI risk/acceleration discourse. True Names (1981) is also one of the first stories depicting cyberspace and virtual identity theft. As a computer scientist writing hard SF, Vinge's technical grounding gave his speculative concepts unusual rigor.
