Summary

African-American scholar, activist, and co-founder of the NAACP who developed the concept of double consciousness and produced the first systematic sociological studies of Black American life.

Core Contribution

Double consciousness: Black Americans experience a twoness — an American self and a Negro self, seeing themselves always through the eyes of others, measuring their soul by the tape of a world that looks on with amused contempt. Veil: racial hierarchy operates as a veil preventing genuine mutual perception. The color line is the problem of the 20th century.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Debated Booker T. Washington's accommodationism — Du Bois insisted on full political rights and higher education for Black Americans, not merely industrial training.
  • Joined the Communist Party at 93, renounced his American citizenship, and moved to Ghana — a final act of political radicalization after a century of American racial violence.
  • Was trained in rigorous German academic sociology at Berlin but chose to write The Souls of Black Folk in an explicitly literary, non-academic mode — believing only that could convey the existential weight of racial experience.
