Summary

Ming dynasty Neo-Confucian philosopher who developed the School of Mind (xinxue) — mind is the ultimate reality — and the unity of knowledge and action: genuine knowledge necessarily issues in action.

Core Contribution

The unity of knowledge and action (zhixing heyi): genuine moral knowledge automatically produces corresponding action; if one knows what is right and fails to do it, one does not truly know. The innate knowledge of the good (liangzhi) is present in all persons — moral cultivation is eliminating obscurations, not adding new knowledge.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Had the epiphany of his philosophy while exiled in a cave — realizing that the investigation of principles (gewu) must proceed through the mind, not external things.
  • Was simultaneously a military commander, court official, philosopher, and educator — his life demonstrated the unity of knowledge and action he preached.
