Summary

American neurophysiologist and philosopher who co-developed the first mathematical model of artificial neural networks — showing how logical operations could be implemented in networks of simplified neurons.

Core Contribution

A Logical Calculus of Ideas Immanent in Nervous Activity (1943, with Pitts): demonstrated that networks of McCulloch-Pitts neurons can compute any Boolean function — providing the theoretical foundation for both neural networks and the computational theory of mind. Co-founded cybernetics with Norbert Wiener.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • The 1943 paper with Pitts showed that neurons could implement logical operations — and/or/not — meaning that in principle a brain is a logical computing machine. This paper was read by John von Neumann and influenced the design of modern computers.
