Summary

American philosopher and psychologist — author of Principles of Psychology, The Varieties of Religious Experience, and Pragmatism — brother of Henry James — who created pragmatism and the first American psychology laboratory.

Core Contribution

Creates pragmatism as a philosophical method — James's pragmatism (that the truth of an idea consists in its practical consequences, its 'cash value' in experience) is the most distinctly American philosophical contribution and anticipates much of 20th century philosophy of science.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Suffered debilitating depression and suicidal thoughts in his 20s — resolved his philosophical crisis by deciding he would accept free will as an act of will ('My first act of free will shall be to believe in free will') and this worked; his philosophy of pragmatism is partly a philosophical generalization of how he cured his own depression
  • The Varieties of Religious Experience was based on the Gifford Lectures at Edinburgh (1901–02) — a sick man's lectures (he had heart disease) that produced the most sympathetic psychological account of religious experience from an agnostic philosopher; he never joined a church but he took religion more seriously as an empirical phenomenon than most of his secular colleagues
