Summary

Classical Chinese Daoist philosopher and literary genius who developed a radical perspectivism — all perspectives are equally limited and partial — and a philosophy of spontaneous non-action (wu wei) and natural transformation.

Core Contribution

Perspectivism: there is no absolute standard by which to judge perspectives; the sage does not take a fixed position (qi wu lun — equalization of things). Transformation of things: life and death, dream and waking, self and other are all transformations of the Dao. Cook Ding: the master acts with the natural flow of things, not against it. The butterfly dream: am I a man dreaming I am a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming I am a man?

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • His prose is the most literary in classical Chinese philosophy — his philosophical arguments are embedded in parables, dialogues, and stories of such imaginative power that they read as literature as much as philosophy.
  • The Cook Ding story: the perfect butcher never hacks but glides through the natural spaces in the animal — a parable of wu wei that applies to all skill and to life itself.
  • Was friends with the logician Huizi and their dialogues — Zhuangzi mocking Huizi's logic while Huizi defended it — are among the most entertaining exchanges in philosophical literature.
