Summary

Vasubandhu's systematic compendium of Abhidharma philosophy — a comprehensive analysis of Buddhist metaphysics, psychology, and ethics in verse with auto-commentary.

Core Contribution

The most systematic presentation of Sarvastivadin Abhidharma: an analysis of all phenomena (dharmas) into their elementary components, an account of karma and rebirth, a psychology of consciousness and mental factors, and a path analysis for liberation. The auto-commentary: Vasubandhu critiques some of the Sarvastivadin positions he is systematizing, anticipating his later Yogacara turn. Enormously influential in China, Japan, and Tibet.
