Summary

American philosopher who developed the higher-order thought (HOT) theory of consciousness — a mental state is conscious if and only if the subject has a higher-order thought about it.

Core Contribution

Higher-order thought theory: a first-order mental state (a perception, a thought) is conscious when there is a higher-order thought representing it. This explains why we can have unconscious mental states and why consciousness is not intrinsic to any mental state. Naturalizes consciousness by reducing it to a relational property.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • HOT theory implies that zombies are impossible in a different sense than physicalists usually claim: a zombie would be phenomenally unconscious because it has no higher-order thoughts, but this is because it lacks the right functional organization, not because it lacks qualia.
  • The theory accommodates the intuition that we can have unconscious pains — a pain that is not accompanied by a HOT would be unfelt, which explains why subjects under general anesthesia can respond to painful stimuli without being conscious of pain.
