Summary

American Jungian analyst who wrote Ego and Archetype, The Anatomy of the Psyche, and The Christian Archetype — providing the most detailed Jungian analysis of Christian symbolism (particularly the Mass and Christ as a symbol of the Self) and the most precise formulation of the ego-Self relationship.

Core Contribution

Articulated the ego-Self axis as the central dynamic of the individuation process — the Self is the ordering center of the psyche and the ego's relationship to it is the measure of psychological health — and showed how the entire Christian symbolic system is an exact map of the psychological transformation the Self requires.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • The Ego-Self Axis (Edinger's core structural concept: the ego and the Self are not the same, but the ego's entire purpose is to serve the Self's individuation project — when the ego identifies with the Self it inflates (the Christ complex, the messiah, the chosen one) and when it collapses away from the Self it deflates — the healthy condition is the dynamic relationship, neither merger nor isolation)
