Former options trader and philosopher of risk — author of the Incerto series (Fooled by Randomness, The Black Swan, Antifragile, Skin in the Game) — whose framework for thinking about uncertainty and tail risk reshaped how practitioners think about probability.
The Incerto framework: (1) Fooled by Randomness: we mistake randomness for skill and underestimate the role of luck in success. (2) The Black Swan: the most consequential events are rare, high-impact, and not predicted by standard models (financial, scientific, historical) — because standard models use past frequencies to predict future distributions, which fails when distributions have fat tails. (3) Antifragile: some systems gain from volatility and disorder rather than being merely robust — the goal is building antifragile systems. (4) Skin in the Game: the ethical and epistemic imperative of having personal exposure to the risks you impose on others. Taleb's framework is the most influential alternative to Gaussian risk management.
