The Message

Disciplines:
theology
literature
biblical translation
spirituality/christian spirituality

Summary

The Message is a contemporary paraphrase of the Bible in idiomatic American English written by Eugene Peterson. Rather than a word-for-word translation, Peterson rendered the biblical text with the same street-level vitality he believed characterized the original Greek and Hebrew. It became one of the most widely read alternative Bible translations in American Protestantism.

Core Contribution

Demonstrated that the biblical text could be rendered in muscular vernacular without sacrificing theological depth; brought the immediacy and strangeness of Scripture to readers alienated by formal translation language.
