Summary

Chinese Buddhist monk who founded the Tiantai school — a systematic synthesis of the entire Buddhist canon organized around the Lotus Sutra — developing the doctrine of the Three Truths and the calming-and-insight (zhiguan) meditation system.

Core Contribution

Three Truths: emptiness, provisional existence, and the Middle Way are not three separate truths but a single simultaneous insight. One Mind contains Three Thousand World-Realms: each moment of mind contains the complete universe in all its multiplicity. Mohe Zhiguan: the most comprehensive Chinese Buddhist meditation manual.

Key Spikes & Highlights

  • Developed a classification of the entire Buddhist canon into five periods and eight teachings — an enormously ambitious hermeneutical project that placed the Lotus Sutra at the apex.
  • The doctrine that each moment of ordinary mind contains Three Thousand Worlds means that enlightenment is not distant — it is the full recognition of what ordinary experience already is.
